Will You Remember Your Life?
Yesterday we helped a friend prepare a house for her parents' upcoming move to Texas.
There were a few of us safely scattered about, assembling cabinets, making flower arrangements, hanging pictures and setting up a home security system.
As a buddy and I were outside doing some work on the front of the house he asked me if spending my Sunday doing little tasks like this was life-giving, or did it pull me away from my regular Sunday routine?
I responded with something like:
All I know is I'll remember this day 10 years from now - anytime I come to this house I'll remember my first visit was to prep for her parents - and I probably wouldn't remember sitting at home being reflective. This seems better.
And this is how I've learned to think about life.
A meaningful life is filled with memorable moments that matter.
Full stop.
Imagine your life is a timeline (not unlike a clothesline) of experiences and we get to pick which experiences we hang along the length of our life.
When you stand back and look at your timeline, how populated is it with rich and vibrant experiences, moments and memories - like garments hanging out to dry and telling the story of your life?
Or are there gaps on the line of months or years where you played it safe, prioritized the wrong things, isolated, wallowed, or gave in to distraction after distraction?
A meaningful life is filled with stories, and stories come from memories of moments that matter.
Where in your week do you notice yourself putting your head down and pressing the gas? Maybe it gets you from Monday to Friday, but what are you missing along the way?
We miss our lives when we measure time in minutes and months instead of memorable moments.
I've been working on a book about living a more meaningful life by creating more memorable moments and I'm excited to share a few of the ideas for the first time on Wednesday.
If you're looking to slow time down and add more memories to the story of your life, I hope you'll join us. It's my gift to you!
